The National Herbarium and Botanic Gardens of Malawi (NHBG) invites applications from suitably qualified candidates to fill the following vacant position which has fallen vacant at our Head office in Zomba:

POST : Irrigation System Operator
RESPONSIBLE TO : Chief Curator

Applicants should be in possession of a minimum of Level 3 Trade Test Certificate in Electrical or Mechanical Field plus. Applicants with three or more years of hands on experience in operation of irrigation water supply system or sprinkler irrigation system will have an added advantage.

Main Duties

  1. Operating pumping equipment to transfer raw water to irrigation establishments (Turning valves, pulling levers, and flipping switches to operate and control motor-driven water pumps that abstracts water from Lilongwe River to an Intermediate reservoir and then
    transferring water from this reservoir to the main storage water tank within the irrigation establishment for irrigation purposes)
  2. Reading flowmeters and gauges to regulate equipment according to water consumption and demand.
  3. Inspecting equipment to detect malfunctions, such as pump leaks or abnormal noises and temperatures.
  4. Repairing and lubricating equipment, using basic hand tools.
  5. Recording data, such as utilization of equipment, power consumption, and water output in log.
  6. Carrying out minor routine maintenance of raw water intake chamber, suction lift pumps intake filters and raw water storage tanks.
  7. Implementing the irrigation scheduling by adhering to the irrigation cycle and interval as prescribed
  8. Monitoring the performance of the entire system and providing solutions to the management in case of malfunctioning of the entire system.
