Malawi Forum for Agricultural Advisory Services (MaFAAS)

The Malawi Forum for Agricultural Advisory Services (MaFAAS) is an umbrella organization of agricultural extension and advisory service (AEAS) providers, actors and stakeholders in Malawi. Its operations in Malawi started in 2011 and was registered as a Trust in 2017. MaFAAS is a member of the African Forum for Agricultural Advisory Services (AFAAS). The vision of MaFAAS is “agricultural advisory services that efficiently and effectively contribute to sustained growth and transformation of agriculture”. MaFAAS also takes on its mission as, “to create harmonization, standardization and add value to initiatives in agricultural advisory services through sharing of information and increased professional interaction”.

Reporting To:              MaFAAS Board of Trustees, Executive Committee and will work closely with AFAAS Technical staff

Job Summary

The country Focal person will be responsible for provision of overall coordination, technical support and supporting and strengthening of national AEAS actors towards inclusive, efficient and effective service delivery to smallholder farmers and other stakeholders in the country. The individual will be the main focal point at the country level and will coordinate overall implementation of activities at national (CF) level.

 Responsibilities

  • Acting as the main focal point and coordinating overall implementation of activities at national (CF) level;
  • Facilitating the planning, implementation, monitoring and evaluation activities of the grant at the country level;
  • Facilitating the process of CF formation and strengthening;
  • Stakeholders’ sensitization and CF meetings (Board, Executive Committee, Annual General Meeting, Technical Working Groups, Conferences, etc);
  • Maintaining and updating CF profile (database of membership, legal status, day-to-day operations);
  • Establishing and sustaining strategic partnerships and collaborations at national level
  • Providing administrative and management support to the CF Board and Executive Committee (EC) and Communication, Information and Knowledge Management (CIKM) Facilitator;
  • Providing support in content generation, development, packaging and dissemination;
  • Providing support to the CF in advocacy and lobbying activities;
  • Assessing CF members capacity in extension;
  • Establishing/strengthening CF level thematic working groups;
  • Facilitating uptake & scaling up of innovations, technologies and practices by farmers
  • Leading resource mobilization at national and regional level;
  • Establishing technical working group for resource mobilization;
  • Supporting TWG to review CFs strategic plan and develop resource mobilization mechanisms/plan;
  • Supporting technical working groups to review AEAS policy and recommend areas for inclusion improvement in AEAS policy;
  • Organizing national policy dialogues;
  • Developing and disseminating policy materials (policy briefs);
  • Facilitating engagement of CF members in national level extension activities;
  • Preparing country progress reports, work plans and budgets for submission to Board/Executive Committee;
  • Facilitating and coordinating national capacity building and lesson learning events;
  • Working with the AFAAS Secretariat Technical staff to ensure that the capacity needs of the CF members are addressed;
  • And any other activities assigned by the CF Chairperson

Qualifications / Skills

  • A minimum of a Bachelor’s degree with five years’ experience or a Master’s Degree with two years’ experience in a field of Agricultural sciences (Agriculture, Extension and Advisory Services; Rural development, sociology),
  • Good understanding about the respective national development agenda and priorities;
  • Good understanding about respective national AEAS policy and strategies;
  • Knowledge of agricultural innovation systems in the country iv Experience in organizational development
  • Experience in participatory processes in extension and research;
  • Excellent knowledge and communication skills on networking, multi-stakeholders’ facilitation, lobbying, and advocacy for AEAS;
  • Good Knowledge on MaFAAS and its structures;
